Login to server smtp.telstra.com failed

Answered

In the last 4 or 5 days I am no longer able to send mail.

Environment: Windows 7, email client: Thunderbird.

The error displayed is:

MailSendError.PNG

If I select "enter new password" and enter my password it still fails.

Outgoing server configuration in Thunderbird is:

Server name: smtp.telstra.com, Port: 465, Authentication method: Normal password, Connection Security: SSL/TLS

I can logon to telstra.com with the same email address and password ok and access webmail. I have tried using different telstra IDs and all have the same issue.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Login to server smtp.telstra.com failed

Thanks Cretsiah,

Inbound mail is working fine.  The outbound mail settings you suggest are the same as in my original post (assuming Thunderbird's setting "Authentication: Normal Password" is equivalent to "Authentication: Yes").

Thanks!

I don't know why the post was flagged as "Solved".  The problem is most definitely NOT solved.

Re: Login to server smtp.telstra.com failed

Hi,

we  have been experiencing the same issue on all our Macs when *sending* mail (from smtp.bigpond.com) for one week now.

It takes several attempts to send an email because login to the SMTP server fails.

We use a POP account and I have read that Telstra wants to force customers to switch to IMAP.

This issue should be followed up with Telstra.

Re: Login to server smtp.telstra.com failed

Hello,

I may add that I am network and system admin and that we have the issue on all our computers office wide !

Until last week we used mail.bigpond.com for the POP and SMTP server. If mail.bigpond.com does not exist any longer the POP server connection should fail as well.

I will try and change the servers to .telstra.com.

If that turns out to be the reason I would be quite disgruntled with Telstra because they wrote a few months ago that our email accounts would be moved to Telstra Mail but we would have to do nothing. I assumed that they would alias the old server.

I will report back later.

Cheers,

Twistan

Re: Login to server smtp.telstra.com failed

@twistan Im not trying to be an arse..... but Telstra has decided to change from the bigpond setup due to the contract arrangements with microsoft being no longer....

Telstra has started its own mail system which I believe is asssociated to the new regulations placed on it by the government in terms of DATA RETENTION ...

and all i can say is please look at further threads in this forum about the changes to the new mail system.... especially if you are responsible for it working.

Screen Shot 2017-02-05 at 12.21.32 PM.pngHi,

thanks for the links. What I meant by "do nothing" is that Telstra has advised that we need not change any settings such as server address and/or port address.

I have just checked the POP/SMTP connection on my personal Mac. At the moment the POP and SMTP server address is working but for the last week the SMTP connection kept dropping in and out.

See screenshots.

Cheers,

Twistan

Re: Login to server smtp.telstra.com failed

Changing the POP server from mail.bigpond.com to pop.telstra.com makes no difference. POP delivery works for both.

It seems as if the *SMTP * connection to both mail.bigpond.com and smtp.telstra.com fails because the password is rejected intermittently.

You can still ping mail.bigpond.com at 61.9.189.249.

I may have to give Telstra's Second Level a call tomorrow.

Re: Login to server smtp.telstra.com failed

@twistan maybe you havent been converted!! yet or are in the midddle of conversion???(thought that was supposed to be finished by now)

however in your screeshots

Screen Shot 2017-02-05 at 12.21.14 PM.png

I dont think "TLS certificate" shoudl be "none" so what does it say under advanced settings?

and yeh I think I have seen this mentioned but not confirmed

"It seems as if the *SMTP * connection to both mail.bigpond.com and smtp.telstra.com fails because the password is rejected intermittently."

anyway good luck

Re: Login to server smtp.telstra.com failed

Hi,

I have just been on the phone withTelstra and they have confirmed that they were experiencing SMTP server issue with some customers. They have recommended to change the password.

Re TLS: for Transport Layer Security (TLS) you need a special certificate that most private clients don't have.

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), achieves encryption w/o a client certificate.

I will post back  if changing the pw has resolved the issue.

Cheers,

Twistan

I have been experieincing the same problem today. Telstra changed my password but this did not work. Telstra have escalated the problem to level 2 support. Most annoying I must say.

After many hours I managed to get the bigpond POP mail account to work but still no success with telstra IMAP account. Unfortunately in all the hassles with the email accounts I lost all my email history when I incorrectly deleted the original bigpond account.Smiley Happy

@twistan dumb me ment to ask you

if you have tried the mail on a windows or a Linux system (as i noticed you suggested using a mac) and does it have the same responses/issues????

given the other apple issues of late had wondered whether or not it was an Operating System specific issue

Dear Cretsia,

Your help is much appreciated, but you don't need to be rude.  Firstly, I don't have a Mac system and never said that I did - that was twistan.  Secondly, you say "you have taken over a week to say thats it is not fixed that doesnt help."  Excuse me, but I responded on the same day as your post to say that I was already using the exact settings specified by Telstra from your initial response (as I had already stated in my original post to start this thread), I'm not sure what else you expect me to say???

In any case, I tried sending mail again today and it is working (at least for now).  I did not change any settings, so it appears to be an intermittent issue on the Telstra side.  I'm just glad I didn't pay Telstra $180 to try to fix a problem that appears to have been a Telstra problem all along.

I don't know why the post was flagged as "Solved".  The problem is most definitely NOT solved.

If your time stamps differ from mine ( i dont know why they would) but I cant actually do anything about that.

I hope that helps clear things up
