Mac mail on outlook

Answered

Last year Telstra was advising customers that we had to migrate our mail to Outlook.  My wife clicked on the email and found that she was automatically migrated without a chance to opt out.  Since then, although she can get email through logging on to Outlook, no email comes in to her mail programme on the Mac computer.

Is it possible for her either to opt out of Outlook and return to ordinary mail or is there some way that mail on outlook can be automatically forwarded to the Mac mail programme.

I have tried a couple of times to sort this out with Telstra phone tech support but with no success.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Mac mail on outlook

If the account is already in mac mail, we'll just change it to use the POP settings of outlook

Firstly, you need to allow POP on the email account. To do this you wiull need to log into it via the outlook.com site

To allow email programs to connect to and download messages from an Outlook.com email account using POP:

  1. Click the settings gear icon () in Outlook.com.
  2. Select Options from the menu that has appeared.
  3. Follow the Connect devices and apps with POP link under Managing your account.
  4. Make sure Enable is selected under POP.
  1. If you want to allow email programs to delete messages in the Outlook.com account after they have been downloaded:
    1. Make sure Do what the device or app says is selected under Deleting downloaded messages.
  2. Click Save.

Now over to macmail

go to mail > preferences > accounts, then click on your email account

On the Account Information

Incoming server: pop-mail.outlook.com

username and password is your full email address and password

Now go to Advanced Tab

Untick the Automatically Detect if it is ticked

Tick the Use SSL box

Port number: 995

Now back to Account Information

Click on the smtp address in the Outgoing Server section, then click edit

Make sure your SMTP server is selected (Probably Called Bigpond)

Server Name: smtp-mail.outlook.com

Description: Can be just Bigpond

Advanced Tab

Untick automatically detect

Use SSL ticked

Port Number: 587

Authentication: Password

put in your username/password

click ok. Then make sure 'use only this server' is ticked

Now just click general at the top of preferences and it should prompt you the save changes

After that you can close Preferences

Close off Macmail completely (E.g right click on it in the dock and force close)

Now reopen it and see how you go

Re: Mac mail on outlook

Outlook is just the platform. It works perfectly fine in macmail though you will probably have to resetup the account as it uses different settings to the non-migrated POP accounts

Telstra email on the Outlook.com platform

If you’re on the Telstra email platform with Outlook.com®, you can choose either of the following types of settings to set up email on your computer, tablet or mobile phone:

  • IMAP and SMTP
  • POP and SMTP

Where possible, it’s preferable to use the IMAP & SMPT settings as they provide an extra layer of security.

POP and SMTP

Your name

Enter your name as you’d like it appear in emails you send

Account type

POP3

Incoming server details

Re: Mac mail on outlook

Yastiandrie

I am afraid that I have had no success trying to follow your excellent instructions. I think old age is working against me but I seem unable to find all the suggested headings to make the changes.

Om my mail programme I go to Mail Preferences - account information, then  my headings are:

     account type

     description

     email address

     full name

     incoming mail server

     user name

     password

     outgoing mail server (SMTP)

a box to tick - use only this server

     TLS certificate

Then on advanced tab I get

Port ... (to select)    a box to tick for use SSL

      authentication  (password is selected)

a box to tick to allow insecure authorisation.

Am I looking in the wrong place? Any further suggestions would be welcome.

Re: Mac mail on outlook

Yastiandrie

Thank you so much for that.  I wouldn't say that everything went quite according to script but, surprisingly, my wife can now receive and send emails on Mac mail.  I had a few hiccups with your instructions - I think that was my fault, not yours - and was going to ask for clarification on a few points. But, as it is working, I'll keep quiet.

Thank you for your time and expertise.
