Telstra Smart Home™ is an innovative system that connects a number of devices around your home to a central hub, all controlled via an app over your smartphone, desktop or tablet.

This advanced platform allows you to switch your hair straightener off from work, or set-up automations to turn on lights when you open the front door. You can even receive SMS updates when motion sensors in your home detect unusual movement, or finally see what your cat is up to when you’re not around.

Managing your home has never been easier, as you can connect Smart Power Plugs to devices such as TVs and lights, switching them on and off whenever you like, and giving the impression you are home even when you are on holidays. If someone tries to open one of your windows, the motion sensor will send you an alert via the Telstra Smart Home App. You can also receive images or video of the activity, giving you peace of mind while you’re away.

You can manage your energy usage through the app, with each connected device sending through data about the wattage they have used. Perfect for those times you leave a home appliance on, you no longer need to spend the day worrying or interrupt your busy schedule by returning home, as the control to switch off these appliances is now literally in your hands.

As we move into the height of summer, the Smart Thermostat allows you to create the perfect indoor climate after a long commute home, with the ability to switch on your air conditioner before you leave work or school. If you are waiting for an important delivery, you can let couriers in remotely and watch them leave your parcel via video, saving you a trip to the post office.

There is one huge problem that I encountered earlier. I have been sent the wrong bulb kit for my home, I have bayonets rather than edison screws. I did make the advisor at the time of the order fully aware of this and it even shows on my order confirmation. No biggy, mistakes happen. After all isnt that why pencils have erasers?

 

Problem is trying to use that eraser. I called 132200 and asked for 'Smart Home Support' to which for some reason I reached Foxtel. Perhaps it was my terrible British accent? I was then connected to smart home support who told me that they cant swap them and that I needed to go to a store. Great, So I went along to my local store who advised there are only 12 - 15 Stores in all of Australia that have smart home kit and unfortunately non of those are in Country Victoria. This didnt suprise me but the they did advise to give 24x7 chat a go. So I did and got told to call 132200. So I did, who told me to like the store advisor to go online and use 24x7 chat. And so the vicious circle of groundhog day continued.

 

In the end I turned to the one place I know ill get an answer, the complaints team. So ive emailed them to get it resolved and also to cancel my 5th camera as I didnt realise I could only have 4 (thats my problem though).

 

Otherwise I am very pleased with the product, even on my slow ADSL connection it handles well and I have spent the day turning on my steam cooker and my desk lamp using the smart plug and impressing the older persons in my family.
