Do you need to buy the t-voice phone to use the app?

I have installed the app on my phone and ipad, it comes up and says its connected but tells me i need to plug a phone line between the router and splitter. Im on NBN so i dont have a splitter.  

I called telstra and after an hour on the phone with 2 different people (neither of which had even heard of the app) the best suggestion was to go and buy the phone from a telstra shop (it has to be a telstra shop because she wasnt sure if they sold them).  Ive looked through the website and cant see where it says i definately have to buy the phone to get this to work.

Based on what this is saying I would suggest that as long as you have an active Telstra home phone line and the correct modem (T-Gateway or Telstra Gateway Max) the app should work.
