Telstra TV advanced remote burning through batteries fast!

I own the Telstra TV 4701TL running software version 10.0.3 Build 6071. Have had the advanced remote for a couple of months now. I just had to change the 2x AAA batteries for the forth time!! Usually I’ve had to change the batteries in tv remotes every couple of years. On the Telstra/ROKU remote, it consumes a full brand new set of batteries in about 2 weeks! Are other users experiencing similar battery consumption… or is my remote faulty. I can appreciate a regular infrared remote only consumes power when you press a button… where as this remote uses both infrared as well as wifi to communicate with the TTV, so faster battery drain probably should be expected… but 2 weeks seems a bit extreme…

Please let me know how much time you get out of your batteries with your remote. Thanks.

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you
  • No, I still need help

Sounds like it's faulty. I've got a smart remote and it's still on the first set of batteries (had it for over a year).

Yep they just sent me a new remote which arrived today, mine were getting depleted in about 2 days though.

Can you send me your TTV's serial number so that I can check its logs?

Re: Telstra TV advanced remote burning through batteries fast!

You have an RC245 remote. The current model is RC596.

The batteries are expected to last for 11-12 months in an RC245.

Your logs are useful and have been added to a ticket.

Re: Telstra TV advanced remote burning through batteries fast!

Thankyou. Telstra have agreed for me to return the remote under warranty and replace it. Unfortunately my local store did not have stock, but I’ll try another store tomorrow. Will post if the replacement unit resolves the battery drain issue.

Re: Telstra TV advanced remote burning through batteries fast!

Thanks #RokuMalcolm.

I swapped the old remote for a new one at the Telstra store. It ended up being another RC245. (Firmware 2.01.19.100)

Set it up last night. New batteries. 24hrs latter it is reporting 90% battery already…so still draining fast.  Will await the next firmware update.

Are you able to give any indication on when the firmware is scheduled for release? If it’s still weeks or months away… perhaps it is possible to request one of the ‘newer’ remotes from Telstra (RC596).

Re: Telstra TV advanced remote burning through batteries fast!

Update:

1 week has past since I started using the new/replacement RC245. Set it up with the new included AAA batteries. As of today the TTV is reporting the Enhanced Remote batteries at 56%. So almost 50% drain per week with relatively light usage.

So can confirm the new RC245 made no difference and continues to have battery drain issue. Will keep checking for the next firmware update from ROKU that will hopefully resolve this.

Re: Telstra TV advanced remote burning through batteries fast!

I have read your comment and agree batteries should last more than 10-12 days.  I have had my enhanced remote replaced in store on 03/11/2021 and the batteries again only last about 11 days.  I have just read your comment and checked my system and see I have an RC245 again.

New batteries last night and this morning at 97%

Firmware version 2.01.19.100

Enhanced Remote RC245

Telstra TV serial YL00EK041426

Can you advise what I should do now?  I have an email receipt of the Telstra in store transaction.

Re: Telstra TV advanced remote burning through batteries fast!

I have just had replaced my Enhanced Remote RC245 with another of the same model.  Both on firmware version 2.01.19.100 and both chew through batteries in a couple of weeks.

What else should I be checking for?

There's no need to replace the remote for this issue.

Re: Telstra TV advanced remote burning through batteries fast!

Thanks for the info RokuMalcolm but after your PM and secret screens fix I'm still losing on average 10% battery per day.  I think Tgelstra will need to start reimbursing us for the batteries we are wasting or supply a RC596 model instead, if that doesn't chew batteries.

What is the actual cause of battery drain?

Re: Telstra TV advanced remote burning through batteries fast!

The firmware on your remote is not the latest. I have firmware version 2.01.19.108 on my RC245.

No problems with the battery life. I am using Energiser batteries in it (I never use the supplied batteries with electronic devices).

Re: Telstra TV advanced remote burning through batteries fast!

Thanks. I’ve tried several times to update the remote but it fails to write. Have disabled the auto update as RokuMalcolm suggested to conserve batteries but not sure if this is working. Did you update the firmware or was it automatic?

I reset all the things I could find and then rebooted both the unit and remote. No change.

The logs from your device show the remote going to sleep correctly from 4:26pm QLD time.

I'll keep an eye on it.

The platform screen should show "(asleep)" soon after you stop pressing keys.

Re: Telstra TV advanced remote burning through batteries fast!

My system is set to automatic updates. I've only ever had to force an update once and that was when I first got the TTV3. Ever since then, it's checked automatically once every 24 hours.

@RokuMalcolm if they're getting failed firmware updates, could it be a problem with the Telstra DNS (which can be notoriously flaky at times), resulting in the TTV not being able to find the server? Do you think that changing the DNS on their modem to a non-Telstra DNS might help if the problem occurs in the future?
