IP address will not change and has not for 8 months

For the last 8 months my IP address on my bigpond Cable extreme has not changed. I have done everything tech support has said to try even having the modem off for almost 2 days yet the ip still stays the same. Now tech support has told me this should not happen that the ip should change. Can anyone help me with this please.. I have the new cg3100d modem

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you
  • No, I still need help

Re: IP address will not change and has not for 8 months

Hi DJ_Inferno,

Cable services have a sticky IP, so they tend to hold onto the same IP unless there is a modem change or the modem has been left turned off and completely disconnected for at least 2 days according to our network team.

We have no way of forcing this change.

Hi hobbytech,

As Shelley has mentioned, we are unable to force changes IP addresses. One thing to try is to leave it switched off for 2 days as recommended by Shelly.

Re: IP address will not change and has not for 8 months

Hello.

I have tried many things, even hours on the phone to telstra, turning off for a day the modem.

THIS IS HOW YOU CHANGE YOUR DYNAMIC IP ADDRESS FOR TELSTRA BIGPOND,

Log into your modem.

Depending on your modem, Google the model. but for many, open your internet browser and type  http://10.0.0.138/ or for cable type in  http://192.168.0.1/

Then.

Admin and Admin to login + Password or look at your instruction.

Then under basic setting,

You'll see Static and Dynamic IP, now Cable can only use Dynamic, BUT type in all the details you see for your static, when you have them all in and click apply.  When you have it correct it will then accept your details.

Then reboot the modem.

It should log-in ok.

Then go to the same place. then change the STATIC IP ADDRESS, just add a number to the last box, or 1 less.

Then apply settings and reboot the modem.

Then it will not work.....

Then back into the same settings and select DYNAMIC AGAIN then apply.

It will then find you a NEW DYNAMIC IP ADDRESS.

All the tech support at telstra couldnt tell me this.

Hope this helps, and finds all the people out there wanting to do this

Re: IP address will not change and has not for 8 months

Hey DDAANN.

I have followed your steps twice and and can confirm it doesnt work sadly ;(((

I wish it did as I see many customers are wishing to perform this on the bigpond

cable network.

Calling BP cable support is a real waste of time as experienced over 12 years they

only read from scripts, which they have to put you on hold to reread the scripts.

I dont blame them as I beleive its Telstra's fault as a whole wanting more money

so outsourcing their work to overseas countries making a fast back for their shareholders.

I digresss but I'm afraid thats the way this cookie crumbles.!!!

Anyway back to topic, and hope someone else has a better way as the only way that

is absolute is changing the modem which guarantees a new mac address but that painful

Did think of testing the router in bridge mode and using smoothwall or clearOS/Clark connect

but havent tested that theory.

Router is a CG3100-D-2

Hardware 2.02 5.

Software 5.7.mp2.V2.06.05

Linux 2.6.30.V2.06.05

Bridging the modem then reverting can also potentially change the public ip.

Also disconnecting the coaxial from the wall when you switch the modem off can land you a better chance of it working. Also if you have cable foxtel it can potentially keep a connection 'live' and prevent an IP jump
